There are many apps that will allow you to access gchat on your iPhone. They are all terrible. They either require signing up for an additional service, are cluttered with cutesy interfaces, or just plain don't work in background mode.
I designed and built just gchat to be as simple as possible. Enter your gchat credentials and go. The UI is 100% inline with Apple guidelines and looks simply amazing.
